This strikes me as coming a little late in the game, but whatever. Story of my life. If you’re a regular visitor/lawful trespasser to the Reasonably Prudent Law Student, you are familiar with my Business Casual Superstar series. (Again, thank you, @BobBlahBlawg, for coining the term. Credit where credit’s due, y’all.) In my BCS posts, I put together business casual looks for law school and the law firm office, each time with a disclaimer that each post is discretionary.

I got an email from Melissa this morning that was just too fun to pass up! Apparently, her law firm is having a casual get-together/mixer type function and everyone’s supposed to come dressed up as a (human) movie character of their choice.

Melissa is one of the younger associates and is going with a couple of her guy friends who are also younger associates at the firm. They’ve decided to do the John Grisham thing and just show up in casual suits as the characters played by Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, etc. Melissa doesn’t want to stick out in a super girly dress (the kinds I like, hah) and wanted to pick my brain for a possible costume/character idea.

I was originally leaning toward a super chic Holly Golightly look, but then thought, since her friends are all going as dapper young associates in suits…why not Annie Hall?

Come on. It’s brilliant. Annie Freaking Hall. An excuse to wear trousers and a necktie and be as adorable as Diane Keaton.

Let’s get to it!

I got a couple emails from people who follow my Twitter account, wanting to know what I wore on my first day as a 2L.

So I put together a look that is very, very similar to what I wore, but not quite out of my closet.

21Silk Georgette Shirt ………. $48
Croft & Barrow Cable-Knit Cardigan in Oat Heather ………. $22.99
Alfani Slim-Leg Ankle Pants (SALE) ………. $19.99
Satin Ruffle Pumps (SALE) ………. $11.49

Distinctions: My cardigan was a little darker and much thinner. Also, not cable-knit. A very summery cardigan. My shirt was a pale mauve, uniform, not patterned. My shoes are almost exactly like that, only NO RUFFLE. And leather.

If I could say only two things about my first day as a 2L, those things would be that it is:

  • done
  • abhorrently lacking in hot elevator boys

Meh. You win some, you lose some.

But can I just say how THRILLED I am that I’m a 2L? Because I think I just did!

I’ll tell you nerds alllllll about my day. Mainly because I’m a bachelorette and don’t have anyone to bother about these things except my brother. And he’s declared a moratorium on my speaking, so…yeah.

First day as a 2L at lovely John Marshall Law School!

Yowza! I can’t believe we’ve reached twenty BCS entries already! To mark this not-quite-milestone, we have another ensemble from this Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep flick. I absolutely loved the color of the skirt in this still from the movie:

So, naturally, I had to try my hand at putting something like this together. Let’s see what I came up with.

Mindy sent in a request for me to put together an outfit somewhat like this one that Leighton Meester (CW’s Gossip Girl) is wearing.

You know, if you’re going to knock off someone’s look, you could do a heck of a lot worse than THE Blair Waldorf. So let’s get started.

Ramadan Kareem!

Today (well, yesterday at sundown) marks the first day of Ramadan, the sacred Islamic month during which Muslims fulfill one of the five pillars of Islam by fasting from sun up to sun down.

Yup, you heard me right: sun up to sun down. We give up food, water, cigarettes and other such things, gum (I always get this question – “But you can chew gum, right? RIGHT?!”), and sex while the sun is in the sky.

Every calendar/Gregorian year, Ramadan comes ten days earlier. Several years ago, we would fast during the short days of winter; in a couple years, we’ll be fasting during the long days surrounding the summer solstice.

There are a few things to know about Ramadan to defeat the whole ‘uncultured American’ perception. And, hey, if you’re ever on Jeopardy or Millionaire, it’s a freebie.
